THE PHONE CALL

By: Jeremy M. Dayton

The Phone Call is a short film about a young man coming to terms with life. The setting is on Christmas Day. He is miles and miles away from his family, and all alone. He is reflecting on the past year or so of his life. He hasn’t talked to his mother in almost a year, and he’s never missed a call from her on Christmas. He thinks he’s breaking up with his girlfriend. He owes a bundle of money that he doesn’t have. Then, to top things off, his car won’t start. To him, the phone is a piece of life right now. The sound of the phone ringing is a Christmas melody to his ears. The thought that everything going wrong in his life right now, can be made right with the sound of a ringing telephone. So he waits, and shares his experiences with us.  Upon reflection, he understands there is more to life than waiting for the phone to ring. He realizes sometimes, you have to either pick it up yourself, unplug it, or just turn the volume down. He finds himself torn, as the power has always been in his hands, yet he has been too stubborn to accept it. Throughout the course of the short, Johnny learns that life is not always between the lines. Sometimes you have to look outside the lines, and sometimes, between the edges. In the end, Johnny realizes that life is much more important than just a phone call.

Writer's Reflection

I just wanted to remark quickly that I have written quite a few screenplays, and the basis of this one can be taken on a somewhat personal level. Obviously, much has been taken not only from my own experiences, but also from many of my closest friends and family. Within the framework of a screenplay, I’ve tried to mold these separate experiences and tribulations, into something meaningful. The interpretation of which can be construed in many ways, depending on the individual. My hope is that, after viewing this film, one will walk away with a sense of purpose and hope, knowing that life is much simpler than it seems, and that it’s never too late to open the door to the future. I hope they feel as strongly about the material as I do.
